The Fear of Death in Moving Images

For the past few months, I have been contributing to WELT TV's English-language documentary output. As highlighted in the “Television” section of my homepage, I worked on several dozen nonfiction films for the prestigious German channel before. The difference is that this time, I did not put my stamp on their German-language output. Instead, they kindly asked me to translate and edit several of their own productions for the English-speaking market.

Much to my surprise, it required me to flex some different muscles to - above all - transfer German idioms while staying as close as possible to the natural inflections of the characters on the screen.

The first documentary I translated and edited this way for my client is particularly noteworthy for its rawness and unflinching depiction of the war in Ukraine.

Bloodshed in Bakmut is available on YouTube for free. I heartily recommend it - and would do so even if I hadn’t helped it come to life.
